San Francisco General Hospital Urban Roadway Study

Project Details

  • Client: San Francisco Department of Public Works
  • Location: San Francisco, CA

San Francisco General Hospital is in the midst of modernizing its campus building stock to meet seismic requirements and better serve patient needs. In anticipation of a repurposing the existing emergency department space and the construction of a new research facility along the southern edge of the campus, MEI (with associate architects Gensler) was tasked with a study of the resulting urban roadway. Informed by a study of trends in multi-modal street design, our team’s preferred design option emphasizes pedestrian safety, clear vehicular access, and gathering spaces around artwork and food service.
